Import Operations Coordinator – Chicago

Altius Talent is working with an established, independently owned international freight forwarder in Chicago that provides end-to-end logistics, customs compliance, and supply chain solutions across global markets.

The Role

This position supports the day-to-day Import Operations function, working closely with customer service, trucking partners, terminals, and rail facilities to ensure timely and compliant cargo movement.

The role is heavily execution-focused and ideal for someone who enjoys ownership of shipments, problem-solving, and keeping cargo moving without delays.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage import shipments post-arrival through to final delivery

• Review and validate Bills of Lading, arrival notices, container and piece counts

• Confirm cargo availability and release from ports and rail yards

• Coordinate inland movements and ensure containers are progressing to destination

• Issue and distribute Delivery Orders to trucking partners

• Track ETAs and update operational systems accurately

• Obtain and communicate pickup numbers to carriers

• Monitor last free days and ensure cargo clears terminals on time

• Handle pier pass, port checks, clean truck programs, and terminal requirements when applicable

• Coordinate customs exams and assist with payment processing where required

• Collect and record Proof of Delivery based on customer requirements

• Monitor exception reports and escalate delivery delays to customer service teams

• Support demurrage and detention mitigation efforts

Experience & Skills Required

• 2–3+ years’ experience in import operations within freight forwarding or logistics

• Strong understanding of port, rail, and inland transportation workflows

• Comfortable working in fast-paced, time-sensitive operational environments

• Highly organized with strong attention to detail

• Confident communicator with internal teams, carriers, and service providers

• Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word

• Team-oriented mindset with a proactive approach to problem-solving
