Company Overview
Altius Talent is partnering with an established freight forwarding and customs brokerage firm in the New York market to find an experienced Customs Entry Writer to join their growing operations team.
Position Overview
The Customs Entry Writer will be responsible for preparing and filing accurate customs entries for import shipments, ensuring full compliance with CBP regulations and other Participating Government Agency (PGA) requirements. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented logistics professional with strong knowledge of the entry process and classification.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, and submit customs entries (ABI) for ocean and air import shipments
- Classify merchandise using the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS)
- Verify shipment documentation for accuracy, including commercial invoices, packing lists, and bills of lading
- Ensure compliance with CBP regulations and PGA requirements (FDA, USDA, EPA, etc. as applicable)
- Calculate duties, taxes, and fees, and resolve entry discrepancies
- Communicate with clients, carriers, and CBP to resolve holds, exams, or documentation issues
- Maintain accurate records in the customs brokerage system
- Monitor entries through to liquidation and address any post-entry issues
Key Skills & Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience as a Customs Entry Writer or similar customs brokerage role
- Working knowledge of HTS classification and CBP entry procedures
- Familiarity with ABI/AES filing systems (e.g., Cargowise, Descartes, or similar)
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple entries under deadline pressure
- Licensed Customs Broker credential a plus, but not required
