Company Overview:

Altius Talent is partnering with a well-established customs brokerage and freight forwarding organization in the Jamaica, NY area to identify an experienced Customs Entry Writer. Our client provides import/export compliance services across a range of industries and is known for a stable, detail-driven operations team.

Position Overview:

The Customs Entry Writer will be responsible for the accurate and timely preparation, classification, and filing of customs entries, ensuring full compliance with CBP regulations and client-specific requirements. This role is well suited to a candidate with strong knowledge of HTS classification, entry documentation, and customs compliance procedures who thrives in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and file customs entries (formal, informal, and ISF as applicable) accurately and within CBP timelines
  • Classify merchandise using the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) and apply correct duty rates
  • Review shipping documentation (invoices, bills of lading, packing lists) for accuracy and completeness prior to entry submission
  • Coordinate with CBP, PGAs (FDA, USDA, etc.), and internal operations teams to resolve holds, exams, or documentation discrepancies
  • Ensure compliance with Incoterms, valuation rules, and applicable trade agreements
  • Communicate proactively with clients regarding entry status, duty payments, and documentation needs
  • Maintain organized entry files and support internal audit and recordkeeping requirements
  • Stay current on evolving CBP regulations, ACE system updates, and trade compliance changes

Key Skills & Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience as a Customs Entry Writer or in a similar customs brokerage/compliance role
  • Strong working knowledge of HTS classification, CBP entry procedures, and ISF filing requirements
  • Familiarity with customs entry software/ABI systems (e.g., CargoWise or similar platforms)
  • Understanding of Incoterms, PGA requirements, and import compliance regulations
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Licensed Customs Broker credential a plus, though not required
